Benefits of Teletherapy

Is it right for me?

What is Teletherapy?

While Teletherapy is different than face to face sessions and can feel like an adjustment, studies show that virtual sessions are just as beneficial and effective. For some, it’s more convenient and can even be more enjoyable (think sitting in your favorite chair with a cup of tea). Some clients report better ease with sharing when using Teletherapy. Me and my staff use a secure and HIPAA compliant platform for our sessions and have obtained additional training to perform Telehealth services.

I’ve tried to think about what questions or concerns you might have and have included a Q&A below that will hopefully address some of these:

Q: Won’t it be complicated to set up a video conference?

A: Nope! I promise, it’s very, very easy! All you need is a laptop, tablet, or smartphone. As long as your device has a camera and speakers, you’re good to go!

Q: Do I have to download anything?

A: If you’re joining from a laptop/tablet, you simply have to click on the link sent to you before our appointment.

Q: I don’t like video calls. Can I just speak to you on the phone?

A: Absolutely! It’s totally up to you.

Q: I feel like it might be awkward.

A: Anything new feels weird at first, but I believe you’ll get used to talking via phone or video quickly, and it may feel just like you’re sitting across from me in my office

Q: I don’t have a quiet space in my home and I’m scared my housemates will hear me.

A: Totally understandable...I have some ideas that might help! You might consider taking the call/video from your car or a quiet park. You may also like to go on a long walk while talking on the phone. Alternatively, we can set up our session during a time when you’re least likely to be disturbed.

Q: I feel like I won’t open up as much through video or phone.

A: Fun fact: Some clients actually feel more comfortable opening up to their therapist on video compared to in-person!

Q: Will it be as effective as in-person counseling? After all, I’m paying for this!

A: Yep - studies have been done on this! They show that video/phone counseling is just as effective as in-person counseling. Many people really like the ability to sit in their favorite chair with a warm drink and have a session from the comfort of their own home. You don’t even have to change out of your pajamas.

Q: Will your hours be the same?

A: One of the good things about phone/video counseling is that I'll be much less limited in the hours I can work. My online calendar will reflect these new times, but you don’t see a time that works for you, please contact me and we will figure something out!

Q: I feel kind of weird about doing phone/video counseling, so I’ll just skip counseling for now.

A: I totally understand that it might feel strange to do therapy differently. I think that phone/video counseling is better than no counseling at all, especially during this stressful time. That being said, I fully support whatever decision you make, and if you decide to postpone therapy, I will be here for you when you return! If you’re still unsure, I’d be happy to do a free 15 minute call/video conference so you can see how you like it.
